Artist Statement
Lee is a mixed media artist from Pennsylvania, USA. He focuses on ceramic and fiber arts as a combined medium for sculptural pieces. His pieces typically reflect whimsy, characterism, and hopefulness. He uses these themes to help cope with his perception of society, which is mostly a delusion. He never felt correct in his standing with people, and often felt “othered”. He uses the term “m.o.nster” to personify his feelings, and creates other m.o.nsters within his art to experience a relationship.
Lee was born in rural PA, and was left to figure out life on his own pretty early on. His father and mother, and the majority of his family made sure that feeling of “otherness” stuck early on. Raising himself came with many complications, especially as a gay man. He moved out at 16, and ended up moving to Philadelphia, PA at age 18. He graduated from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics. He is currently residing in Lansdowne, PA, where he volunteers to run an accessible ceramic studio for the local community at UtilityWorks. He is practicing his art as a Resident Artist in Asbury Park, NJ, at AP Clay.
